Story of my life!

I had had a really long day and all I wanted to was, hit the sack. So sympathising with my tired eyes for having subjected it to hours of incandescent radiation from the mobile screen, I took off my glasses, when I caught sight of a lone strand of white hair on my head peeking out from behind the stiff black locks. And then, all hell broke loose. I began tugging at it in an attempt to see the last of it – when my mother caught me in the act. What followed was an hour long sermon (on how if I pull this one strand out, a hundred more will take its place), stern reprimands (for the rustic state of my hair.) and my incessant bawling (Because I clearly couldn’t stand the shock).
As I googled for remedies that might help put me out of my misery, I carefully tucked the reason for it beneath the still, seemingly dark mane, in a belligerent attempt to shield my age along with the other insecurities that threatened to oust my reality.

Cheers!

Of shooting stars and fairy dust ✨

She wakes up to her heart seeking rainbows and sunshine,
Searching the skies, amidst clouds, for a ray of hope to bask into the soul benign,

She wakes up to her brain chock-a-block with anxiety, with answers none but questions crystalline,
With dreams of fairy dust, of stars, of success, of impeccable shine,

She relentlessly pushes boundaries, desperately marches ahead –

To carve her own path to tread,
To prove to the world her stand, the strength of her spine,
To pursue what matters to her, no matter how infinitesimally bovine,
To compete with the world, to give herself an identity,
To break all chains and become who she wants to be,
To impress the wayfarer, the belligerently unknown,
To make up for everything that she wants to atone,

Disappointed, she returns, as twilight strikes,
Yet, with experiences enough to help her realise –
The regret, the failures, the fears, the flaws,
The light, the silence, the mess, the farce –

They haven’t let her down, they are the reason she steps forward to try,
They give her the strength to flap her wings, they propel her to fly high!

Cheers!

The impending need for Gender Equality.

I was scrolling through a few of the #MeToo posts on my timeline, when,

I thought I’d bring a few questions clawing my mind, to the society’s attention –
Why do you throw the girl child to the ants, why are you so pained by her presence,

When would you understand that SHE, is the reason for your very existence?
Why does her attire become the reason for your prejudice,

When her very being is always subjected to insurmountable injustice?
Why does it irk your ego if she wants move higher up the ladder, why do you expect her to compromise?

Why should she always be the one to sacrifice?

Wouldn’t her hard-work, her commitment, her passion for her work, just suffice?
Why do you advocate to her something, what you wouldn’t for yourself, find appropriate?

Why, despite being born an equal, do you expect her to be servile, to be the subordinate?
Why, when both are to blame, is she alone forced to mend her ways, is asked for a character certificate?

Why, what she brings with her, always seems to the world, a tad too inadequate?
Why is there still, such deep rooted misogyny and patriarchy, why is there no space for gender equality?
Why don’t we understand it’s #HeForShe, and that’s exactly how the world is designed to be?!
Cheers!

Perceptions

You meet a lot of new people every day,

Some leave, some stay,
But the bruises from the past seem to clout the present,

They force you to block equations new, experiences incandescent –
So, why give passers-by large shoes to fill?

Why burden them all to have your back, to fit your bill,
Because, the ones who are meant to stay, no matter what, will,

For the rest, well, your beating heart, would want to stay still.
Cheers!

She

Be it at 9 in the night or 6 in the morning, she is required to quicken her pace,

She lives with worry lines that crease her forehead, with fear that clouts her face,

She isn’t allowed night outs, parties for her are a big no-no,
She is expected to sacrifice, to forgo, to let go of her ego,

She doesn’t get to stay alone, she doesn’t get to make her own choices,
Her silence, most often than not, gets overpowered, by raised voices,

She is judged for what she chooses to wear,
She’s judged for her joy, for her passion, for her pride, for her despair,

She is judged for who she chooses to be ,
She’s judged for everything she says or does- whether she’s six, or sixty,

Everytime she steps out, she steps out with an extra layer of caution,

For, there’s no place on this earth that she can call her home, her safe haven,

But hey! She is born an equal, she ain’t here to shoulder his blame, she ain’t here for him to maim,
This world she lives in, is hers too, to belong in, is hers too, to claim,

She should breathe in peace, not in panic, not in pain,

Together, it’s time we make this place safe for her, again!

Who art thou?

Of the million people who call themselves your friends, who are those who’d really be by your side?

Who are those you can actually pledge your life for, the hints below will perhaps help you decide –
A) They don’t talk to you everyday, but you know,

They’ll be there for you, come rain or shine, storm or snow.
B) You talk to them every second minute, they are your life boat,

They know when you sneeze, miss your bus or spill your coffee – they’re basically your strength, your moral support.
C) They’re pretty preoccupied always, they’re the perpetual busy bees,

But one call you make, they’ll make you their priority, letting everything else freeze.
D) They text you only when they’re bored or free or when they have nothing else to do,

You can gauge what you mean to them with the frequency of their replies to you,

You’re never their priority, with a hundred unread messages, yours will be the last they’d respond to.
E) They don’t want to do anything with you,

But they’re pretty keen in knowing what you’re upto,

They keep track of where you go and what you do,

They’re always the first to ask you “Where?” When? How? With who?”
F) They read your messages, but don’t intend to respond,

They receive your calls, but find reasons to abscond,

But they want you to be there for them everytime they demand,

And, ask you to, without missing a beat, understand.

Stick to the people who stand by you, for they are the sunshine in your rainbow,

They are who you can cling on to, for life – don’t ever let them go.

For those who only give you their excuses for company, leave them alone,

Delete their contacts, and clear some space in your phone!

Let’s fly high, my friend

Let not the society pull the strings of our lives, of our destinies,

Let not our race, religion, caste or creed decide who we are, or define our indefinable capacities,

Let not opinions biased, tarnish our hopes, our ability to try,

Let not doubts unascertained, limit our will to fly,

Let not stopgaps and pitfalls deter what we choose to pursue

Let nothing stop us from living our dreams, from becoming what we aspire to.

Cheers!
